Academic Analysis of the Rise of Extreme Right Parties (ERPs)
Testes (2009) (Note: only studies EU15 - 15 members states1995-2004 - before accession of post-communist states, Cyprus and Malta)
Support for ERPs begins to rise in 2005
(EU Constitution vote)
Looks for correlations between
confidence in EU Insts (begins to go down 2005)
socio-economic factors
increase in racial identity
Independent Variables: unemployment, income inequality, size of immigrant population, incidence of crime
FINDINGS
"The results suggest, in sum, that the attitude of support for ERPs is more strongly related to lack of trust in the EU and, consequently, to the rejection of the idea of a European Constitution, as well as to the voter's perception that she is informed about the EU, than to the frustration or satisfaction as to the economic benefits that European integration could be represented to have brought. This suggests that the defense of values, beliefs and identities prevails over the material advantages economic integration is capable of generating."
